Akila Jayawardena

Akila Jayawardena is an independent visual journalist based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, representing the fourth generation in the Sri Lankan photojournalism industry. With proven expertise in observing economic, political, and social dynamics, Akila delivers comprehensive visual coverage that captures the interconnected forces shaping contemporary Sri Lankan society.

Since 2017, Akila has established himself as a dependable photojournalist, building an impressive portfolio of high-quality work documenting Sri Lanka’s most significant news events. His professional expertise has earned him collaborative relationships with the country’s major publications, including Ceylon Today, Roar Media (a prominent South Asia-focused digital media platform), Ravaya (Sri Lanka’s leading alternative newspaper), and The Sunday Times (the nation’s premier newspaper). Throughout his career, Akila has consistently demonstrated his ability to deliver deadline-sensitive content that adheres to rigorous international editorial standards, making him a trusted contributor to Sri Lanka’s media landscape.

Akila’s work as a ground-zero photojournalist began in 2017 with coverage of major news stories throughout Sri Lanka. His photography has captured significant events including the 2018 Sri Lankan Constitutional Crisis, the 2019 Easter Bombings, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, and the 2022 Economic Crisis—consistently documenting how these pivotal moments intersect across economic, political, and social spheres.

Currently contributing as a global agency photographer with Nur Photo Agency, Matrix Images, and Reuters Pictures, Akila maintains extensive networks with both local sources and international editorial teams.
